Synthesis of Vitamins in the Human Gut

چکیده

to hand, and it appears to be one of growing importance. We therefore refer to the subject again. The idea that vitamins could be synthesized in the gut was suggested about 30 years ago, and the occurrence of it in the gut of animals was first demonstrated 20 years ago. The production of vitamins in the gut of animals has been attributed to the presence of various micro-organisms in the gut. Vitamin production in the gut is apparently particularly marked in ruminant animals, whose rumen is naturally rich in micro-organisms including cellulose-splitting bacteria. During recent years, opportunity for further study of bacterial activity in the gut and vitamin production has been afforded by the discovery of the action of certain poorly absorbed sulphonamides, such as sulphaguanidine and succinyl sulphathiazole, in reducing or temporarily eliminating bacterial activity in the gut. The action of these sulphonamides in animals has been followed by a marked fall in the excretion of various vitamins, and this is attributed to interference with bacterial activity producing them. Practically all the known fractions of vitamin B have been shown to be synthesized in the gut of animals,

Systematic genome assessment of B-vitamin biosynthesis suggests co-operation among gut microbes

The human gut microbiota supplies its host with essential nutrients, including B-vitamins. Using the PubSEED platform, we systematically assessed the genomes of 256 common human gut bacteria for the presence of biosynthesis pathways for eight B-vitamins: biotin, cobalamin, folate, niacin, pantothenate, pyridoxine, riboflavin, and thiamin. On the basis of the presence and absence of genome annot...

Effects of Vitamins K in Neonates and Young Infants

Vitamin K is required for the hepatic production of blood coagulation factors II, VII, IX and X. The term vitamin K refers to a variety of fat-soluble 2-methyl-1, 4-naphthoquinone derivatives. Vitamin K1 (phylloquinone) occurs in green plants, while vitamin K2 (menaquinone) is synthesized by microbial in the gut. The recommended dose of vitamin K in neonates is 1 mg intramuscularly. For infants...

Evaluation of vitamins diversity produced by probiotics in the microbiome and introduction of selected species

Vitamins are important micronutrients and are often precursors of enzymes that living cells need to perform biochemical reactions. Because humans cannot biosynthesize most vitamins, therefore, they must be obtained exogenously. Although a variety of vitamins are found in most foods, many people's vitamin deficiencies still occur mainly due to malnutrition as a result of inadequate food consumpt...
